•Revisits Making up Users (Young, 2006).•Suggests that there may be emancipatory potential in making up users.•Provides examples of made-up users put forward by legal scholars to create fairer markets: The Moral Investor; The Moody Investor; and the Underclass Investor.•Outlines the opportunities and challenges of accounting scholars participating in making up users.
