Development of a model for identifying suitable sites for rainwater harvesting for enhancing irrigation: A case study of Ngerengere Catchment

Abstract

A model for identifying sites for in-field rainwater harvesting reservoirs has the potential to enhance irrigation. However, the existing models only identify sites for specific areas and do not address the utility, specifically the appropriate irrigation methods for the identified sites. This study introduces a model for identifying suitable sites for in-field rainwater harvesting reservoirs. The model further identifies appropriate irrigation methods for the identified sites. The model was executed in the GIS model builder. The input parameters for the model are soil texture, land use, rainfall, area of interest and slope. The output is an in-field rainwater harvesting reservoir sites suitability map and a corresponding appropriate irrigation methods map. Thirty reservoirs in the Ngerengere catchment were used for calibrating and validating the model using Google Earth Pro, yielding an overall 84 % prediction accuracy. Model results show 6 %, 84 % and 10 % of the Ngerengere catchment as unsuitable, moderately suitable and very suitable for infield rainwater harvesting reservoirs and irrigation. The model also indicates that 12 %, 61 % and 23 % of the Ngerengere catchment is appropriate for drip, sprinkler and surface irrigation.
