Abstract

The manufacturing sector is a major purchaser of services and therefore has a significant impact on growth in the service sector. Conversely, there is not as much impetus generated by services to the manufacturing sector. In 2009, industrial production led to the creation of a further 3.8 million jobs in the service sector. The impact on employment in support services to enterprises was particularly high. In the economic policy debate, these relationships should be stronger than has been the case to date. A one-dimensional assessment of the drivers of economic growth based solely on the economic structure of an economy falls short. It both underestimates the importance of the manufacturing sector and overestimates that of the service sector.
