Abstract

This paper measures the gender score gap of Colombian students in the math and reading components of the Pisa test. The econometric exercise shows that on average, boys outperform girls in math, and girls outperform boys in reading, when comparing boys and girls with similar individual, family and school characteristics. Moreover, using the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition I find that observable characteristics account for 22% and 34% of the gap in math and reading, respectively. This effect is due mainly to individual factors, that is, if girls do not outnumber boys in the last grades of secondary school, and additionally, they don't have a lower repetition grade in comparison with boys, the gender gap would be greater in math and lower in reading.
