Abstract

Cooperative firms are characterised by specific governance mechanisms. Although these structures are entirely microeconomic in nature, they imply positive economic as well as societal external effects. These effects cannot be achieved by either voluntary or forced ex post corrections of entrepreneurial results. The member value concept as an adequate guideline for cooperative management inherently implies responsibility for its societal results.
