Abstract

In the first part of this survey article, Klaus-Dirk Henke examines the development and update of health economics as a subject and research area over the past 40 years. As opposed to health economics as a topic of research, healthcare is at the same time a thriving industry which he also analyzes. In both cases transparency and reliable information are prerequisites for good governance in health. The author also elaborates on the interdependence between health economics as a research field on the one side and the health care industry as an economic branch on the other.
