Creating new flexibility at Bergen Airport

Abstract

In 2009, an international competition was launched for an extension to Norway’s second largest airport, Bergen Airport. Nordic — Office of Architecture was invited to participate, but soon the team realised that the scope did not allow for a sustainable development in the long run. Team Nordic suggested a new approach, creating greater flexibility to develop a highly adaptable masterplan. This experience underscores the impact a masterplan has on airport efficacy, income potential and passenger experience, highlighting the intrinsic link between masterplan layout and the potential for a rational terminal building.
