Unlocking Romania s Tourism Potential: A Data-Driven Analysis of Competitiveness Factors

Abstract

Tourism is considered an extremely important economic branch for a nation, generating profit and improving the external visibility of the country. Attention to this sector from public and private representatives is necessary in the context of intense international and national competition. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the competitiveness of tourism in Romania, based on a questionnaire survey applied to a sample of 470 respondents. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used to identify the components of competitiveness, which were subsequently validated through confirmation Factor Analysis (CFA). The results indicated five components: transport infrastructure, hospitality in accommodation and restaurant units, natural attractions, and anthropic attractions. The results showed that transport infrastructure was perceived as the weakest component, with average scores below 3 on a five-point scale, while hospitality and natural attractions were rated highest, with average scores above 4. Unlike previous studies, factors influencing competitiveness were not predefined but were empirically determined through statistical analysis, highlighting the originality of the approach. The study is relevant for public decision-makers, by identifying regional strengths and weaknesses, and for tourists, by supporting more informed choices regarding travel to Romania.
