Nampt: Intracellular and Extracellular Influence on Diabetes and Obesity

Abstract

The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) as a result of increased Obesity, or disability is increasing rapidly. However, only a relatively small percentage of obese individuals develop T2DM, suggesting the contribution of additional factors to whole body insulin resistance. Pharmacological intervention with several anti-diabetic agents, such as Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause increased weight gain, but remain the only option for the majority of obese individuals.
