ABSTRACT This document makes a characterization of the relations between the income distribution and the level and growth of the per capital GDP at a departmental (subnational) scale in the years 1996, 1998 and 2003. There´s an assessment for the coast departments as if they repeat the general national standards, like the fact that a higher initial inequality is related to higher growth, but higher inequality is related with a lower level of final inequality, too. After having detected a convergent trend in inequality between departments, but not in the national inequality, an inequality decomposition analysis is done for the whole country as so as coast departments.
