Abstract

Although expatriation is an important issue in the international expansion of many organizations, research evidence suggests that expatriate failure rates have remained moderately high, particularly so in developing countries, in which they reach up to 70%. However, this evidence is widely criticized, as it is based on the most popular indicator of failure: premature return of international assignees, which in turn, does not reflect all the relevant dimensions of the expatriate success. For these reasons, the paper aims to develop a holistic approach to the success of international assignments, as well as to identify the key factors that influence the various dimensions of this success. In particular, it discusses the concept and dimensions of success, the essence of expatriate success and its measures, organizational, individual, family-related and environmental factors determining the success of international assignments. The proposed concept of success is based on the study of literature and empirical results of a pilot research project carried out by Department of Human Capital Management at University of Economics in Cracow.
