Travel mode choice as a representation of travel utility: A multilevel approach reflecting the hierarchical structure of trip, individual, and neighborhood characteristics

Abstract

Trip characteristics, travel utility, socio‐economic characteristics, and built environment influence travel mode choice. Since the elements have a hierarchical structure, this study conducted multilevel multinomial logistic regression to evaluate the relationship between these elements and travel modes. Particularly, this study focused on how twelve types of expressed travel utilities affect travel mode choice for five travel purposes. The results show that people consider various travel utilities for each travel purpose; these elements influence the travel mode choice of cars, public transit, or non‐motorized modes, for example, public transit is preferred for punctuality and multitasking in commute, and for health benefits in shopping. Las características del viaje, la utilidad del mismo, las características socioeconómicas y el entorno construido influyen en la elección del modo de transporte. Dado que los elementos tienen una estructura jerárquica, este estudio realizó una regresión logística multinomial multinivel para evaluar la relación entre estos elementos y los modos de viaje. En particular, este estudio se centró en cómo doce tipos de utilidades de viaje descritas afectan a la elección del modos de transporte para cinco propósitos de viaje. Los resultados muestran que las personas tienen en cuenta varias utilidades para cada propósito de viaje. Estos elementos influyen en la elección del modo de viaje de los automóviles, el transporte público o los modos no motorizados. A modo de ejemplo, se prefiere el transporte público por la puntualidad y poder atender a múltiples tareas en los desplazamientos al lugar de trabajo, y por los beneficios para la salud en las compras. 移動の特性、移動の効用、社会経済的特性、および建造環境が移動モードの選択に影響する。要素が階層的構造であるため、本稿では、マルチレベル多項ロジスティック回帰を用いてこれらの要素と移動モードの関連性を評価した。特に、12種類の移動の効用が、5つの移動の目的に対する移動モードの選択にどのように影響するかに注目した。結果から、移動のそれぞれの目的に対して様々な移動の効用が考慮されていることが分かった。すなわち、これらの要素は、自動車か公共交通機関、または自動車を用いない移動モードを選択に影響を与える。たとえば、公共交通機関は、運行時間の正確さや通勤中にマルチタスクができるため、または買い物の際に健康上のベネフィットが得られるために選好される。
