Employment growth in Canada and the United States during the recovery from COVID-19

Abstract

From peak employment in January 2020 to the employment trough in May 2020, employment in Canada declined by nearly 20%. This decline amounted to roughly 3.4 million jobs lost at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.Note The impact of lockdowns on Canada’s labour market was sharper than it was in the United States, where total employment from peak to trough fell by just over 14% (22.4 million jobs).
