Abstract

The aim of the research is to assess the recent demand for programming language skills among employers in Russia. The official surveys of Rosstat on the number of employees and vacancies, as well as the database of job advertisements of employment services, which allows to estimate the demand for workers with different types of skills, were used as data. Several important findings were revealed. Since 2016, the demand for programmers has indeed significantly increased, not only in the core industry, but also in companies of other types of economic activity, such as manufacturing, trade, financial and insurance activities, various types of business services. At the same time, the requirements for knowledge of programming languages are found almost only on vacancies for programmers (77% of the total number of vacancies with the requirement of knowledge of programming languages), heads of relevant departments (8%), and engineers (7%). At the same time, the impact of knowledge of a programming language on wages varies depending on its type - the most highly valued knowledge of Python and JavaScript.
