Abstract

This paper discusses the theoretical approaches to the analysis of cities in the period of the destruction of traditional society and the formation of modern urban communities, as well as the applicability of these theories to the analysis of urban communities in the North Caucasus (for example, Makhachkala). Urbanization in the North Caucasus are also considered in relation to the transformation of urban communities characteristic of central Russia in the late XIX - early XX century. Demonstrated that the effects of the expansion of the traditional society in Makhachkala differently valued by "progressives" and "conservatives" and belonging to one group or another does not depend on religious beliefs of study participants (those who belong to religious fundamentalists in their views may belong to both the conservative and to progressivist direction).
