Abstract

Quintana Roo, is one of the youngest states of the Mexican Republic and has become known, in the region and internationally, for its success in the tourism industry. This economic activity has generated numerous employments for the Yucatan peninsula and for the country at large, evidenced by the high immigration rate. However, in recent years employment conditions in Quintana Roo have deteriorated, indicating a paradoxical relationship with the level of education. The results being that higher educated labor force are unemployed. This situation is replicated nationwide where employment is precarious, especially in areas where the main activity is tourism and services in general. This paper analyzes the situation that educated youths are facing in the state of Quintana Roo. It also offers possible solutions from a holistic perspective of regional development and suggests the diversification of economic activity where regional development planning and policy becomes relevant.
