Abstract

The link between ethnic conflict and migration is of dramatic importance to developing countries. Human and entrepreneurial capital is indeed often detained by an ethnic minority. This study attends to overcome limits due to the impossibility of survey in origin countries (permissions...) ans uses Australian microlevel data. Several migratory profiles are isolated, some of them being clearly linked to the socio-political context in country of origin. Results suggest evidence of a flow of minority migrants whose departure was "forced" by the socio-political context in origin country. Besides, analysis of return migration indicates that once having migrated, these migrants are more likely to remain abroad, thus generating a net human capital loss. However, analysis controlling by educational level generates some optimism: minority elites appear more tempted by a potential return (were discrimination to be abandoned?) due to difficulties in maintaining socio-economic status abroad
