Abstract

The question of nuclear deterrence, which for many years has been debated in public opinion and among political parties, is still being asked. It is a considerable investment, even if in terms of the declared power of states and military force, its impact on inter-state and international relations is considerable. The questions of the independence of the weapon, its civilian and military opportunity cost and its operational effectiveness are raised, with the United Kingdom favouring dependent cooperation with the United States, and France seeking to improve the independence of its choices.
