Abstract

Historically, industrialized countries have often been quite supportive of democratic values. The question of correlation arises, but it does not imply a causal link either. In fact, economic power becomes the key to political power. There are even contradictions between political democracy and capitalism, which has been compatible with slavery or colonialism. Economic development without democracy is possible, especially under an enlightened authoritarian system, which is often more effective than a corrupt democracy. However, democracy is a system of control that more structurally curbs militarism, authoritarianism and the effects of domination. Respect for human rights allows for a debate on the kind of growth and the extension of its fruits to citizens. However, globalization reduces democratic potential in the face of the forces of money. It is still dominant today, while the universal is disappearing. Politics must reinvest the economic, rejecting the technocratic, utilitarian and selfish visions of a very stingy capitalism of expression of collective values, contrary to the incentives of democratic values.
