Abstract

Les auteurs analysent la stabilité de l'accord portant sur la restriction de l'offre de café adoptée par la plupart des pays producteurs en 1993. Pour cela, ils développent un modèle de jeu répété en tenant compte de la différenciation verticale des produits prévalant sur le marché. L'Arabica est considéré comme étant la qualité haute et le Robusta la qualité basse. Les résultats théoriques montrent que : la collusion est d'autant plus soutenable que les différences de qualités sont élevées ; si la coopération concerne la totalité des pays producteurs, la différenciation des produits implique des effets opposés sur l'incitation à la trahison (non respect du quota de production) pour les pays producteurs de qualité haute et les producteurs de qualité basse. Ces derniers, producteurs de Robusta, seraient dissuadés de dévier de l'accord contrairement aux pays producteurs d'Arabica. Les auteurs montrent, de plus, qu'un accord soutenable peut être obtenu que s'il ne concerne que les producteurs d'Arabica. Enfin, ils montrent quel peut être l'impact négatif de l'hétérogénéité des consommateurs sur ce type de collusion.
