Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of the school day extension on educational outcomes from a large scale Brazilian federal program (Mais Educação) in 2012. For this purpose, it explores a fuzzy discontinuity status in the forcing variable, which is lower social economic status at schools that had more than 50% of its students as beneficiaries of another federal program, the Bolsa Família conditional cash transfer policy. Despite the fact that these schools are more susceptible for participating, there are no evidences of improvements on school evasion, school failure, literacy and mathematics. There are no evidences of heterogeneous results also according to the share of the students covered by the program or to the number of activities related to formal disciplines.
