¿La cuna marca las oportunidades y el rendimiento educativo? Una mirada al caso peruano

Abstract

La investigación educativa muestra una estrecha correlación entre el rendimiento de los estudiantes peruanos y su nivel socioeconómico (NSE). En este documento se usan datos del estudio longitudinal Niños del Milenio para analizar si las oportunidades de aprendizaje (ODA) en matemática de los estudiantes se asocian al NSE y al rendimiento. Las ODA fueron estimadas a partir del análisis de los cuadernos de estudiantes de cuarto de primaria en escuelas de diverso tipo al interior del país. También se administraron encuestas a sus docentes. El análisis evidencia que el NSE de la familia al año de edad predice las ODA y el rendimiento once años después. Las diferencias en las ODA se dan principalmente en el número de ejercicios realizados y el porcentaje de ejercicios correctos, a favor de estudiantes de NSE alto. También se halla que en general los ejercicios presentan un bajo nivel de demanda cognitiva. Finalmente, las capacidades trabajadas en clase distan bastante de las que presenta el Diseño Curricular Nacional para cuarto grado de primaria. Las variables de ODA se asocian positivamente con el rendimiento, aun luego de controlar por una serie de variables (incluido el NSE). Se encuentra que, en contextos de bajo NSE, contar con altas ODA lleva a mejoras significativas en el rendimiento. Así, mejorar las ODA podría ser un instrumento para disminuir la inequidad que agobia a la educación peruana.
