Abstract

This article proposes methodological rethinking of case study to understand innovation processes in organizations. Constructivist and sociotechnical analysis argue that knowledge is co-constructed, not merely discovered, through an interaction between researchers and actors with technological artifacts. A single case study is investigated—a Colombian musical organization—and innovation is considered both as a product (the recorded song) and a process (the mediations, practices, and relationships that enable it). This proposal emphasizes the epistemological flexibility of the case study, which has the merit of including qualitative and quantitative analyses, as well as its applicability to analyze complex organizational dynamics. Referencing Yin (2018), Stake (1995), Eisenhardt (1989), and Lincoln and Guba (1985), this paper argues that the case study should be a critical and reflexive methodology for understanding innovation at the intersection of knowledge, technology, and institutional context.
