Abstract

The Sinu River is one of the most important sources of water of the Colombian Caribbean Coast for two reasons: Its environmental importance and vital role in the development of the economy and culture of those who inhabits the banks of Sinu. The river flows through eight municipalities, where this resource is used for economic activities such as: stockbreeding activities, which cover the 57% of the Cordoba’s area, agriculture, fishing and one of the largest projects conducted in the department of Cordoba, The Urra hydroelectric. Informality activities also have taken place in the river. For instance, some of the banks of Sinu’s inhabitants income depend on sand mining and informal transportation. In addition, while a majestic and prosperous civilization was settled in the Zenú region, at present it faces one of the highest rates of poverty, forced migration, violence and land inequality in Colombia.
