Abstract

******ABSTRACT: The Ranchería river covers nine out of fifteen municipalities of the department of La Guajira, in its path from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to its mouth in the Caribbean Sea. The main function of the river is not only its direct exploitation, but also its role as a regulating agent of the ecosystems that exist along the river basin and for its role as channel for irrigation. Additionally, the river represents a great cultural value to the indigenous communities that inhabit in the department. The most important public project of La Guajira depends on the river. The construction of the dam El Cercado, in the south of the department, is part of an ambitious economic recovery program of the region. At this date, the national and local governments have invested more than COP$650.000 millions in it. However, you cannot see the results of that investment because the project has not been finished yet and it is not completely working.
