Abstract

Even though Colombia has shown a significant reduction in its homicide rate, this one remains comparatively high as a result of the sharp incidence of homicide within certain Colombian regions. This study analyzes the evolvement of the geographical structure of homicide between 2003 and 2010. This is carried out through a spatial analysis of the municipal homicide rate, employing three approaches: The first one looks at the spatial distribution of the homicide rate. The second one establishes that said distribution is not random within the Colombian territory. The third approach formally identifies the peaceful and violent areas of the country. Results reflect a persistent tendency towards the agglomeration of peaceful and violent municipalities. Patterns found suggest that the disputes, amongst irregular groups, related to the territorial dominance over strategic areas for the production and traffic of narcotics constitutes one of the aspects that trigger violence and determines its scope.
