El Canal del Dique y su subregión: una economía basada en la riqueza hídrica

Abstract

La subregión Canal del Dique, ubicada en la Costa Caribe colombiana, es una llanura aluvial conformada por un complejo de humedales en donde habitan una gran biodiversidad de especies terrestres y piscícolas. El recurso hídrico es su principal activo ambiental y el eje del sostenimiento económico y cultural de las comunidades asentadas allí. Las principales actividades económicas son la agricultura, la ganadería y la pesca, predominado la explotación artesanal y de subsistencia. Pese a que esta subregión posee una gran riqueza natural, su gente presenta altos niveles de pobreza por su baja educación, deficiente cobertura de servicios de saneamiento básico y bajos ingresos. Para lograr el desarrollo sostenido en esta subregión es necesario invertir en el capital humano dándole mayor educación y salud a su población, para que se conviertan en controladores y conservadores de sus riquezas naturales y mejoren la productividad de sus actividades económicas.
