Enfermedad Holandesa y Exportaciones de Banano en el Caribe Colombiano, 1910- 1950

Abstract

Una de las principales causas para el limitado desempeño económico de la Costa Caribe en los últimos 100 años, fue el fracaso rotundo de su sector exportador en las décadas iníciales del siglo XX. Para entender mejor que sucedió se analiza el comportamiento del banano, el principal producto de exportación del Caribe Colombiano durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Además, se argumenta que el escaso dinamismo del sector exportador en la región fue una consecuencia del incremento en las exportaciones de café, entre 1910 y 1950. En particular, ello fue resultado de la presencia de lo que se denomina en la literatura económica la enfermedad holandesa. Con este último término se conoce la situación en la cual el auge en un producto de exportación conduce a la revaluación de la moneda local, y por lo tanto a la pérdida de competitividad del resto de las exportaciones.
