La estructura económica de San Andrés y Providencia en 1846

La historiograf�a sobre San Andr�s y Providencia, las principales islas colombianas en el Mar Caribe, ha argumentado que en el periodo que va desde fines del siglo XVIII hasta comienzos de la d�cada de 1850 el archipi�lago tuvo una econom�a mono exportadora de algod�n. Luego y hasta los a�os 1950, el algod�n fue reemplazado por las exportaciones de coco. En este ensayo argumentamos que la econom�a que hab�a en las islas antes de la era del coco no estaba tan estrechamente especializada en la producci�n de algod�n, y que se cultivaban una gran variedad de productos agr�colas. Fue s�lo con el ascenso de las exportaciones del coco que San Andr�s y Providencia vivieron un periodo de exportaci�n de un �nico producto agr�cola que hizo que su econom�a fuera vulnerable a la inestabilidad de ese sector. Para la discusi�n se utiliza un detallado informe sobre la econom�a del archipi�lago encontrado recientemente por el autor en el Archivo General de la Naci�n.
