Immigrant overeducation across generations

Abstract

A large body of literature shows that first-generation immigrants born in developing countries face a significantly higher likelihood of being overeducated than natives. However, when it comes to assessing their descendants' overeducation, evidence is remarkably scarce. Therefore, using granular employer–employee data for Belgium over the period 1999-2016 and generalized ordered logit regressions, we investigate the intergenerational relationship between overeducation and origin among tertiary-educated workers. We find that immigrant overeducation disappears across two generations, except for workers originating from the Maghreb. However, immigrant overeducation appears to be a persistent intergenerational issue within the cohort of parttime female and male workers.
