Salud pública y situación hospitalaria en Cartagena

Abstract

Los indicadores de salud de Cartagena no son muy alentadores, si se comparan con otras ciudades del país o con la media nacional. En el caso de la cobertura, en los primeros años del siglo XXI Cartagena tenía un indicador por encima de la media de Colombia, pero significativamente inferior a ciudades como Bucaramanga o Bogotá. Por su parte, el indicador de número de camas por cada 1.000 habitantes resultó crítico para la ciudad. La tasa de mortalidad infantil es crítico para Cartagena, si se compara con la media nacional. Las muertes infantiles por causas infecciosas dejan ver fallas en los programas de prevención, destinados a disminuir la morbilidad y mortalidad. Con respecto a las finanzas públicas se encontró que el presupuesto destinado al sector de la salud en Cartagena fue creciente en la última década. Lo preocupante es que las transferencias per cápita recibidas por Cartagena han sido inferiores a la media nacional a partir de 1998. En medio de esa aguda crisis fiscal de los hospitales públicos, hay que destacar la buena gestión administrativa y el sentido de pertenencia del Hospital Infantil Napoleón Franco Pareja y de la Clínica de Maternidad Rafael Calvo. Estos buenos ejemplos deben ser objeto de estudio y emulación por parte de otras instituciones de salud de la ciudad.
