Aguachica: Centro Agroindustrial del Cesar

Abstract

Aguachica es un centro agropecuario importante de la región del Magdalena Medio, en donde confluyen diversas actividades económicas de los municipios del sur de Cesar, sur de Bolívar, Santander y Norte Santander. Este documento identifica la estructura económica de esta localidad y su evolución en la década del noventa del siglo XX, se encuentra que su economía gira alrededor del sector agropecuario, la agroindustria y el comercio, lo que ha permitido el surgimiento de una serie de servicios de apoyo. Durante la década en estudio, el sector agropecuario presentó un estancamiento en los principales cultivos debido a diversos factores: cambios climáticos, competencia de productos agrícolas importados a menor precio y el deterioro del orden público en su zona de influencia. La crisis de la agricultura orientó el uso del suelo hacia la ganadería, con efectos negativos en la utilización de los factores productivos. Actualmente el sector industrial se especializa en la agroindustria de productos alimenticios, cuyo potencial puede ser impulsado con nuevos proyectos que le den valor agregado a la producción agropecuaria, genere riqueza y mejore el bajo nivel de vida de la población.
