Montes de María: Una subregión de economía campesina y empresarial

Abstract

La subregión Montes de María está ubicada en la parte central de los departamentos de Bolívar y Sucre en el Caribe colombiano. Su economía está basada en actividades agropecuarias, con tradición en ganadería bovina y cultivos campesinos de yuca, ñame, maíz, arroz, plátano, tabaco, café y aguacate. Recientemente se han desarrollado cultivos comerciales de palma de aceite, cacao y ají picante. El objetivo de esta investigación consiste en describir la evolución de la economía de esta subregión en la primera década del siglo XXI y su potencial productivo. Los resultados mostraron un bajo desarrollo económico que está limitado por los problemas de violencia e inseguridad, la alta concentración de la tierra y los altos niveles de pobreza y miseria. No obstante, posee un potencial económico por desarrollar como los cultivos agroindustriales y forestales, así como el turístico.
