Abstract

This chapter sheds light on investigating the function of informal controls when concurrently used with tight formal management control systems. Based on the case study of 3M Company that uses archival data, I captured the mechanism that informal controls balance MCS and create dynamic tension while formal control is used tightly. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of viewing management controls comprehensively and the role of informal controls.
