Abstract

This chapter describes the unique structure of the German family business landscape. The range of German family businesses is diverse. The family firms are clustered according to size classes and their age structure is examined. A comparison with publicly listed companies, their industry structure, and their historical development emphasizes the importance of German family businesses. The analysis of the founding activities gives an idea of how many foundations with promising business models have to take place every year to make sure that this structure of the German family businesses can continue even in 100 years.
