Abstract

Vienna’s tourism sector is thriving, with heritage tourism playing a key role in attracting visitors, especially those interested in gastronomy and the arts. Heritage tourism has become a recognized form of alternative tourism for international tourists. Heurigen, Vienna’s traditional wine taverns, have played and continue to play an important role in Viennese society, as they are known for their unique atmosphere shared by locals and tourists enjoying wine, food, and in some places folk music. In addition, the Heurigen has an important social function, as people of different socioeconomic status share a table to eat and drink together. As a symbol of appreciation of this cultural contribution, the Austrian Committee for UNESCO decided to include the Heurigen in the Austrian National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Unfortunately, nowadays, changing lifestyles, especially in consumption, have caused the number of Heurigen to decrease from over 500 in the 1960s to about 100 in 2020. Given the limited research in this field, this paper highlights the critical cultural, social, and economic contribution of Heurigen to Viennese society. Furthermore, the purpose of this paper through literature review and participatory observation is to provide an overview of the issues and challenges of Heurigen as a cultural tourism destination. The results show that stakeholder engagement and participation, along with marketing initiatives and advertising policies, are crucial to enhance brand loyalty and local attachment. Preserving the world’s cultural heritage is vital to enrich and educate current and future generations.
