Abstract

Waste management has been identified as a key sustainability topic in the hotel industry worldwide. Greece relies heavily on the tourism industry, making the strategic development of sustainable practices in the hotel industry even more pressing. Our research highlights the waste management-related material topics identified in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Sustainability, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Reports published by hotels based in Greece. Content analysis of secondary empirical data found in the most recent (2018–2024) and publicly available reports is used to find the waste-related key issues that affect the Greek hotel industry. The findings indicate that recycling, food waste management, waste reduction, staff and guest training, and education on responsible waste management matters and sustainable procurement are some of the key waste-related challenges. 91.8% of reports mention the hotel’s waste management policy, indicating at least the presence of a waste management interest. By engaging with the increasing demands of sustainability reporting, hotels can improve their operations and managerial processes, adopting a strategic CSR approach that can help mitigate the impact of their waste.
