Abstract

The tourism sector has played a vital role in supporting the economy, particularly during economic downturns. In Cyprus, tourism remains a key economic driver, with holidays being the primary purpose of travel. Recently, there has been a surge in new building permits within the hospitality sector, including hotel developments and other tourist accommodations. Consequently, it is essential to specialize in and enhance tourism products to meet guest needs, aiming to provide comfortable and pleasant accommodations. This paper delves into the recent developments in the hospitality sector in Cyprus, focusing on recent trends, economic impacts, and innovative design proposals. The research employs a case study methodology under the “Hotel Design—Agrotourism” project proposed at the University of Nicosia. In support of sustainable development, the study incorporates biodiversity principles for hotel and resort design. Emphasis is placed on respecting traditional architecture and ensuring functional premises to serve hotel guests better. The design proposals draw inspiration from Cypriot culture and nature, encompassing local landscapes, natural materials, light, patterns from the cypress tree, traditional architecture, the pomegranate's seeds, and creating a sense of intimacy through all five senses. The final proposal aimed to design sustainable living spaces using natural materials while maintaining the village's authentic character. The proposals reflect a comprehensive approach to hotel design, integrating culture, sustainability, and contemporary functionality to enhance the tourism experience. This presentation provides a platform to discuss these innovative ideas and their potential impact on the future of tourism in Cyprus and similar environments.
