Abstract

This chapter introduces the basic questions posed in this book, and provides an overview of the different chapters. We explain why we analyze long term regional growth trajectories, and why the case of Germany is particularly well-suited for such an analysis. We then describe how we proceed and briefly describe the main findings provided by the different steps of our analysis.
