The ranking craze: universities

Abstract

The craze of journal ranking goes hand in hand with the craze of research evaluation and ranking of universities. National research evaluation programmes are not worthwhile in terms of costs and benefits. They are the means for starving universities of funding, with the ultimate objective of leaving them to the mercy of the market. In the short run, these programmes are used to humiliate academics and keep them on a short leash. They have forced researchers to modify their behaviour, which may involve the neglect of vital research areas that do not appeal to the panels. Like any other craze, the craze of ranking journals, universities, departments and disciplines will not come to an end swiftly because there are powerful beneficiaries.
