Abstract

This chapter focuses on the evolution of upstream activities (i.e., procurement and sourcing strategy) in global supply chain management and how they have become an integral part of corporate management on a global basis. It presents the insourcing-outsourcing (i.e., make-or-buy) dichotomy of sourcing strategy, as well as its geographical scope (i.e., domestic sourcing versus offshoring), and discusses various types of sourcing strategy. Finally, the chapter expands on differences and similarities in the sourcing of service activities as opposed to manufacturing activities.
