Australia and the OECD work on education

Abstract

This chapter sets out Australia’s engagement with education matters in the OECD, outlining the relationship, including an assessment of the value of education activity. It shows that Australia sees the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) as the most important education programme in the OECD, and the chapter chronicles Australia’s substantial commitment to the development of this programme, including the need in a federation to secure the necessary participation of state governments which deliver education. It shows also that the Australian presence in the Secretariat of the OECD has probably been greatest in Education. Key words: education; assessment; federalism; PISA
