Cuadernos del CIDS. Envejecimiento y longevidad: fatalidad y devenir: teorías, datos y vivencias

Abstract

Este texto pretende ser un sintético referente, sin ninguna aspiración de exhaustividad, para comprender la vejez, el envejecimiento y la longevidad como una construcción social, compleja y contextual, así como para diferenciar la vivencia individual del envejecimiento, de su abordaje como fenómeno colectivo. Se ilustra la gran variedad de interpretaciones asignadas a esta etapa de la vida y sobre todo se cuestiona el impacto de las visiones que fundamentan políticas, programas y prácticas sociales en el entorno de las personas mayores. Se revisan los significados de la edad; la institucionalización de la trayectoria vital alrededor del trabajo; las posturas polarizadas frente a la vejez entre fatalidad y devenir; la vejez como objeto de la gerontología social; la invención de las categorías "tercera edad", "envejecimiento activo" y "envejecimiento positivo", y algunos estudios sobre longevidad. Se advierten los riesgos de la medicalización de la vejez y del uso de las nociones de vulnerabilidad, fragilidad, dependencia y resiliencia. Se analizan los vínculos con la pareja, la familia, los cuidadores y la red social. Se considera que a pesar de los condicionamientos biológicos y socioculturales existe un margen de autonomía individual para asumir la vejez, por lo cual es ilusorio predecir absolutamente el proceso de envejecimiento y, más aún, estandarizado. Por el contrario, se reconocen diversas formas de envejecer, como lo testimonian las narraciones biográficas producto de la investigación.
