Abstract

This article provides an analysis of the impact of Canadian foreign direct investment on the Pittsburgh regional economy. We focus on the specific behavior of Canadian multinational firms in Southwestern Pennsylvania, the influence of the Canada/U.S. Free Trade Agreement and the North American Free Trade Agreement on their actions, the economic dynamics of the Pittsburgh region, and the policy implications of our analysis for state and local decision makers. In general, Canadian FDI has had only a modest impact on the regional economy, and NAFTA may have discouraged further investment in production facilities in the area.
