Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to analyse the possibilities and limitations of using the educational game “Eko Smakosz†in academic teaching, as well as to evaluate the potential of adapting its mechanics for managerial training and scientific research. Design/methodology/approach: A case study method was employed, comprising quantitative research (pre-test and post-test) and qualitative research (participant observation and DATA model debriefing). The study was conducted on a group of 14 individuals (university students and employees) who played a series of game sessions. Findings: The study demonstrated an increase in knowledge and participant engagement with subsequent gameplay sessions, despite initial scepticism. It confirmed that the mechanism of immediate feedback effectively motivates learning. Research limitations/implications: The limitations of the study include a small, non-representative sample size and the randomness of the game, which complicates the comparison of results without a strictly scripted experimental scenario. Research problem: The primary research issue was to determine whether a game with a niche and mundane topic (healthy eating) is capable of eliciting full engagement from participants regardless of their prior interests. Originality/value: The article fills a gap in research on games developing “green competencies†. It also demonstrates that a simple educational game can be effectively adapted for teaching universal managerial competencies, such as resource optimisation or project management. It is also well-suited for scientific experiments.
