Abstract

The objective of this paper is threefold. First, it seeks to stress the importance of the sensitivity of wage differentials to the set of control variables used. Secondly, the nature of this sensitivity is investigated, that is, how the properties of the control variables are related to the magnitude and direction of their influence on the estimated wage differentials. Finally, the paper presents a study of the effect of possession of work documents on the wage level, with an example and counter-example, the latter being a case of how an increase in the number of control variables does not necessarily lead to a reduction of the wage differential
