Abstract

This special issue of Moneta e Credito on the centenary of the birth of Paolo Sylos Labini, proposes a re-reading and critical study of issues related to his rich scientific production. Sylos LabiniÕs numerous contributions have been guided by a vision of political economy as a social science that has, as its main object of study, an understanding of the forces of economic and social development and decline. Sylos Labini analyzed economic development as a process characterized by the overlap between real economy and finance, by the complementarity between public intervention and market mechanisms, and by dynamic interactions among technical progress, components of aggregate demand, market forms, and distribution of the income. We propose here five articles that analyze Òwith Sylos LabiniÕs lensesÓ current problems concerning the economics discipline, the Italian economic crisis, the imbalances between central and peripheral countries in the Eurozone, and public debt.
