Abstract

[eng] To understand the science and technology relationship, we need to know more about the networks through which embodied skills and tacit knowledge, materials and substances are exchanged. Informal networks organising knowledge exchange exist outside markets or firms and have been empirically shown to facilitate innovation. In this article, we use co-authored papers as indicators of the heterogeneous networks underpinning science and technology links. We examine the UK system of informal industry links by analysing 14 years of co-authorship data. Our results suggest that informal networking increasingly characterises industrial research, though industrial sectors differ greatly in the extent to which they network with university researchers.
