Is there a European knowledge system?

Abstract

Can an emerging European knowledge system be discerned that exhibits internal coherence, has identifiable boundaries, and interacts as a distinct entity with other bodies? As scientific and technological, political, economic, social and other aspects of European integration contend with regional, cultural and global forces, such a system would form part of a complex set of multi-level, overlapping knowledge systems that are gradually evolving to complement existing national systems. New indicators are presented that provide evidence of an emergent European knowledge system based on the institutionalisation of S&T interactions within and beyond Europe.
