Abstract

The contemporary state of international scientific collaboration in post-communist countries is analysed, using the results of a synchronous study, carried out in 1995 in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belorussia, Russia, Ukraine. The changes that took place in the early 1990s are considered in relation to inclusion in international research projects, participation in international meetings, publication in international journals and editions, preferable foreign partners, and so on. The comparison of national case studies has revealed the considerable distinctions among the countries, related to their previous position and science policy. However, the main conclusion is a common one: international interactions have proved to be an important force affecting the transformation of national science systems.
